Into Another World (seer/savvy/dreamer)

Evelyn looked up at the house, unsure of what to do. She had come here with confidence, but now that she stood here, in front of the infamous 'haunted' house, she was nervous. Kari had sent her here, claiming that she would finally be accepted as 'popular' if she spent the night in this house. She wiped her palms on her pants to get rid of the sweat that had formed there, and readjusted her glasses. She fidgeted with her hair, which was pulled into braids on either side of her head as an excuse to stall entering.

She heard a noise behind her though, that made her jump. That was not a good sign; she was scared before she even got into the house. She turned around to find one of her classmates walking up to her. She recognized the girl, although she didn't know her very well. Mellissa, although she wasn't sure. She cleared her throat, and waved at the girl.

Mellissa really didn’t care what others but she found them interesting. She would watch and observe but most of the time hang out with her friends. She found her life completely normal…and boring. Some days she wished for something to spice it up, do something out of the ordinary. However she wasn’t the one who would go out of the rules. She wasn’t a stickler for them but she wouldn’t do anything really illegal. She never went to go out to get drunk with her friends. If she was in Mexico that might be a different story but it wouldn’t be illegal, plus she wasn’t that fond of the taste of alcohol anyway.

Mellissa decided to go to a place where there would be some activity in the school, she didn’t want to go to the club she was in today. She went to the mansion that was “haunted”. Personally she didn’t believe in any of that ghost crap. She would go this time to see what those idiots that were supposedly “popular” were doing today. She saw a girl with braids in her hair. She looked familiar but she wasn’t so good with the backs of people’s heads instead of faces. Evelyn, she thought. She stepped on the first step, a loud creak came out. She silently cursed, and heard a jump. She looked up and saw Evelyn looking at her. She smiled and waved a bit.

“Uh…Hey Evelyn, what are you doing here?” she asked quickly.

Evelyn shrugged. She was embarrassed to admit that she was here because she wanted to be accepted. She had always told herself that popularity wasn't important, but when they offered to let her in. . . she couldn't resist. And so here she was. But she couldn't tell that to Mellissa.
"I just thought I'd check it out," she finally said lamely. "You?"

As she waited for the girl to respond, she scanned the house she would soon be spending the night in nervously. It might have been beautiful once, but years of neglect had left it in shambles. Every window in the place had been busted up by rocks thrown by children's arms. The places that were wood had rotted, leaving holes in the walls. The stronger places that had been built with bricks were over grown with creeping vines. She couldn't even imagine what it would be like once she got inside. She shivered as the wind picked up a bit. She wished she had have brought a jacket.

She looked at the old house with a little sadness, a few more years and this place might not even exist. Granted most of them might not exist. The grass around the house was overgrown, the walkway to the house was all broken up and weeds were growing out of the stone cracks. It gave a feel of desperation and sadness, unbelievable sadness. Mellissa looked up at Evelyn and wondered what this girl was going to do to the house. In her mind she gave a small glare to her, but she showed a small smile.

“I just heard the populars saying something about this place and I wanted to make sure it wasn’t something bad.” This time she let her small glare show. She wasn’t going to let a place like this get hurt even more then it already was, not when she could stop it. She knew she wasn’t the most popular girl in school, but she wasn’t in the least unpopular, and she would fight those who thought they could do whatever they want just because they were “liked” by everyone.

As the wind blew her hair she noticed the girl shivering. Why would the popular idiots send a girl like Evelyn to this place? Evelyn was much to… sweet looking, for lack of a better word, to do something like destroy the house. Oh please no, she thought, not an annoying initiation thing. The poor girl looked scared out of her wits. She gave a small smile.

“So instead of saying you’re here because you want to “check it out” can you tell me the real reason, you looked scared out of your mind just by looking at the place. Can’t blame you though, place is a little creepy.”

Evelyn blushed, and looked down at the ground.
"W-well," she stammered, "Jenny Moore said that if I spend the night here, she's let me hang out with them." She brushed her bangs out of her eyes, and winced as they got stuck on the rim of her glasses. She was far too nervous.
"I want you to know, I don't usually do this kind of thing. I-It's just. . . my best friend moved away, so. . ." she coughed. "Anyway, I think I need to go in. I don't know if they're watching." She shrugged, and hesitantly walked into the house. She glanced behind her, half hoping that Mellissa would follow her in.

Mellissa looked back, she didn’t see anyone. She sighed, should she go in, the poor girl was frightened enough as it was. Mellissa scratched her head still thinking on whether she should or not. Her better half said she should go in, and she usually always listened to that half, it was the one that got her into this situation in the first place. She breathed in once more and walked in. Looking back once more she saw nothing. They probably weren’t going to come to even see if Evelyn would even stay the whole night.

She walked in slowly and saw spider webs all over the place. Dust coated the place like snow and ice on the South Pole in winter. She gave a cough and saw the dust rise. She gave a frown, the poor house was alone for so long. Great I’m feeling sorrow over an inanimate object, she thought finding herself weird. The floorboards were old, actual wood that would probably lead to a basement. The hairs on the nape of her neck stood up, this place wasn’t haunted but very rickety and dangerous. She heard a long creaking noise. This place wasn’t safe, and something wasn’t right.

Evelyn winced as she took her first step into the place. It wasn't a good start when the floor didn't feel solid under your feet. The place was filthy, and literally falling apart. The furniture that had been left behind had white dust clothes over them that fluttered like ghosts in the wind that came in through the broken windows. She was relieved to see Mellissa coming in after her. She felt a little better now that she knew she wasn't alone. She looked around the room, wondering what would still be left in such an old place.

There wasn't much, other than the furniture. The only thing that caught her interest was an ancient looking mirror leaning against the back wall. She walked cautiously towards it, squinting to see her reflection through the coat of dust. There seemed to be a symbol drawn on the mirror.
"What is this?" she asked quietly. She reached out to brush the dust off, and she felt a strange, almost electrical, feeling pass through her body.

Mellissa walked around, looking at the cloths carefully. She wanted to rip one off to see the furniture underneath it but the dust that was coating the cloth would raise into the air and end up everywhere which would probably lead up to her getting yelled at. She shook her head. She walked carefully the wooden floors probably couldn’t take a lot of weight and it was better to test it out then fall into a basement. It would not be nice to fall on either, just looking at the coarse wood told her splinters galore.

She looked at the stairs, there was no support for them but they looked sturdy. She tested one foot on the first step, she didn’t fall through. Then the second, nothing happened. She had heard of a stairway like this before, it used geometric forces or something like that. She wanted to believe that but didn’t trust herself so she went back down.

“We shouldn’t touch anything,” she said, but it was too late, when she turned to see Evelyn she was reaching towards a mirror. Evelyn was being absorbed in a light. Mellissa didn’t think just reached for Evelyn quickly, but she slipped on the cloth covering a piece of furniture. She reached but couldn’t tell whether she had grabbed Evelyn or not.

Evelyn heard Millissa's warning just a second too late. Her fingers brushed up against the glass, leaving a smudge through the grime that covered it. She yanked her hand away, worried about the strange feeling she was getting. She saw the mirror begin to glow, and she tried to back away. Something seemed to be pulling her though, and she found herself moving towards the mirror instead. She opened her mouth to scream, but her voice was locked in terror. She looked back as she felt Mellissa grab the tail of her shirt. Within seconds, the two girls had disappeared into the light. The only sound in the empty house was the wind.

A great burst of light surrounded the two as Mellissa yelped from surprise. She felt as if she was being sucked into something torn into a million pieces at once but still remaining whole. Her whole life was flashing before her eyes, from the homecoming she first attended, which was this last one, to when she was a kid. A sentence appeared in her minds eye, the past reflects who you are. She saw herself as she felt being thrown into a new space or time. The past reflects who you are, and what is reflected creates the future.

Mellissa closed her eyes as she felt herself being thrown still from the light and she didn’t want to see anymore. She felt a weird sensation of…falling. Oh crap, she thought. She braced herself for impact as the feeling of gravity and weightlessness hit her as she free fell a good three and a half, four feet. Oh crud, she thought of the floor that would probably crumble beneath them and she squeezed her eyes tight.

They landed with a thud, but it didn’t hurt as much as she expected it too, yet she refused to open her eyes, if the ground was going to suddenly collapse she wanted them closed.

“G-get off of me,” a person huffed. She opened an eye lid and saw a white guy, around nineteen with black hair and blue eyes. She gave a sharp intake of breath and thought, oh crap we’re going to die.

Evelyn gasped as the mirror sucked her in. She closed her eyes, trying hard to ignore the many sensations she was feeling. Everything ended with a sudden thud. She could feel soft flesh under her, and she risked opening one eye. When she saw the back of Mellissa's head, she jumped up and fell backwards. She looked around her, confused and scared. They were in a house that looked almost like the one they had just been in. There were. . . differences, however. The damage seemed to be done by something other than age. She backed against the wall, whimpering. She found herself looking at Mellissa, and realized that the other girl was lying on someone as well. She wrapped her arms around herself.

Who was that? Where were they? She closed her eyes, trying to get a hold on her fears.

Mellissa felt Evelyn move off of her, how they got that way when she went in first she had no clue, and she let out a breath of relief. Then when a person pushed her onto the ground she frowned. Great, thanks for getting me even dirtier, she thought. She sat up and started to brush the never ending dust off her clothes when she heard something strange. The person who pushed her on the ground had the nerve to ask why she was doing there. Strange question but she rolled her eyes. She sighed and gave a smile, “Hi there, I’m Mellissa and that Evelyn, and we came here through the door, well at least I think we did.”

She looked at her light brown hair, now coated gray from the dust, and sighed, she couldn’t wait to see the rest of her. She looked at Evelyn who looked a little shaken. Mellissa could understand, she felt the same but she had to keep on a mask saying she wasn’t. She wouldn’t let this person find a weakness, a part of her wanted her to shut up like she usually did, but her hackles were up at this moment and during those times animals usually would snap and growl, which was what she was doing.

Taking a small initiative she stood up and brushed the dirt off her pants, which did nothing, and looked at the cove that stood in front of her. She stood in front of Evelyn to where Evelyn could see but she could do something in case this cove did something. She held out her hand.
“I’m Mellissa,” she said flatly.

Evelyn watched from her little corner. She wasn't stupid, and she didn't want anything to do with whatever was going on. There was one thing she was sure of - they were no longer in the same house. She watched Mellissa with a bit of jealously. Even in this strange situation, the other girl was calm. Evelyn just watched the strange boy cautiously. He had a dangerous air about him that she didn't trust.

“We didn’t come through the door, well that’s weird. I could have sworn we came into this creepy house through the door.” She looked back at the mirror; something so simple couldn’t have given her the chills earlier could it. She thought over what he said.

“Wait we came through a mirror! What the heck is this about an organization? And also watch your mouth!” Mellissa gave a small glare and went back to her thoughts. This creepy old mirror sent them here. She made sure she now stood directly in front of Evelyn; if one of them had to get hurt she’d rather it be a person who she could trust get some one who could help. Plus Evelyn would look like she would go in shock, not a good thing. She starred at the man keeping her gaze level, everything he would do she would watch and act accordingly. Her job was to keep Evelyn right now and then find a way home.

Evelyn sniffed, and readjusted her glasses, which had been knocked crooked during the fall. She looked at Mellissa with a mixture of awe and disbelief. That guy had a gun. And there was obviously something going on that they didn't know about. All this talk of weapons and organizations. . . they hadn't fallen into the middle of a battle, had they? She shook her head. And then there was his wild claim that they had come out of the mirror. The most basic of her science classes told her that was impossible. Glancing back at it now, she could see solid stone wall through the broken pieces of glass. There was no way they could have come through there.

But strangely, that was the only thing that made sense. They - she - had touched the mirror, and it had glowed, hadn't it? And then they had ended up in this weird house, with this tense stranger. She shook her head. None of it made a bit of sense. She fought through her fear to force her legs to support her, and stood up shakily. She had to calm Mellissa down before one of them got shot.
"H-hold on," she stammered. "We don't know how we got here. W-where is here, anyway?" She looked around the house with wide eyes, fighting off hyperventilation. Now was not the time to panic. But no matter how she told that to herself, she could feel her heart trying to pound its way out of her chest.

“District?” Mellissa asked, she couldn’t believe what she was hearing. This guy…Rhodry, was apparently on PMS mode, one moment he’s acting calm, next he’s a little mad, then he was about to shoot someone, and now he’s back to being normal.
“We aren’t from a “district”, we’re from Denver. This can’t be your house, because it right outside of our school so technically this is the school districts property and not your own. We have already established that through your mind we didn’t come threw the door, but if we didn’t come threw a door of some kind we wouldn’t be here, now would we. Also the fact that women are just as equal to men does not mean anything on overstepping my bounds; we are not in the 19th century here so women do have rights. So stop PMSing OK? We don’t know what is going on, we just came here and landed on top of you, which has to be the worst thing to happen as of yet.” She let out a breath, she couldn’t believe she said that all in one go.

She stared at this Rhodry guy right in the eye and said one last thing, “and the reason I said stop cussing is one I don’t like it and two it makes you seem even more of an idiot then you already are.” She said the last part just to push him further, as if to say shoot me I don’t care, but mostly to tell her annoyance. When she had her hand behind her she moved her hand to tell Evelyn to run or to leave somehow. She always got a little worked up when the whole feminist debate got into play. She sighed letting all of her anger out through the breath, “We…I have no clue on the whole district thing and what the heck is going on, ok? We just came into a supposed haunted house and touched the broken mirror and ended up here, happy now, you know our life story.” Sure she was sarcastic, but that was they way she was made out to be, plus she was already annoyed. She put her hands on her hips but hoped Evelyn would get away soon or had already gotten away.

Evelyn saw Mellissa's hang gesture, but she didn't move. There were two reasons for that. One: she didn't want to leave her new companion alone, and two: she couldn't trust her legs to move. Her knees had locked, and she was sure that if she tried to move, she would fall flat on her face. And although that might distract Rhodry from Mellissa, she didn't want to risk getting shot herself. She didn't know what to do now though. Mellissa seemed determined to work this guy into a frenzy.

"Mellissa," she whispered, "look around us. Does this really look like the same house we were just in?"

“Dude, how did you know I was thinking you were PMSing?” she asked, “Denver is a city here in Colorado and there is a school right next door to this house, right close to some trees and crap. And the only districts I know about are voting districts and school districts, maybe some others but I don’t care right now.” She noticed that he had noticed her motioning and sighed.

She walked to the front door and looked to Evelyn, “What do you mean it looks different, all it looks like is there might have been bombings near it and it looks dustier. If you live here why don’t you clean this place up! Plus the night shift, are you talking about some job or something. I don’t believe you, it seems like you just wanted us to leave just a little while ago.” Mellissa opened the front door and heard a gun shot and jumped, right where her foot was not so long ago was a bullet hole.

“Holy crud what in the heck was that,” Mellissa asked, “and why is Denver turning into such a place, is the freaking Mafia back in place?”
