Alexis squinted into the microscope, looking over her newest blood samples. She sighed and leaned back in her chair, rubbing her tired eyes with one hand. It was no good. She had gone over these a hundred times, but the result was always the same. She could find an agent that stopped the virus from multiplying, but it was always unstable. If she could only find a strain that could live for more then a few hours. . . But there was no point in dreaming about it. She would just have to work harder, that’s all.

“What’s it look like out there?” she asked over her shoulder. A large form in the shadows moved to get a better view out of the heavily bared window.

“Stable. A few singles out there, but no mobs, no specials. Why, we need a trip?” Shaun spoke in his normal husky voice, looking over at his older sister.

“Yeah, I think so. I know they’ve been doing some sick experiments over at The Center. We need to see if we can find some fresher blood samples. If we can, I’d like to get a sample from the mutants they’re making, see if their blood reacts any differently to the remedy I’ve been working on.”

“Whatever you say, sis,” Shaun said, shrugging his broad shoulders. “Just tell me which ones to shoot.”

He grabbed his semi-automatic off the shelf, double checking that the chambers were loaded. It wasn’t a long walk to The Center, but even going next door was dangerous these days. He may not have been able to save the rest of their family, but he would die before seeing anything happen to Alexis.

Cole felt horrible. He was sick, hot, tired, and so very thirsty. And hungry. It wasn't fair! He didn't sign up for this. He had come here seeking a cure for his little brother. The scientists were all liars. Instead of helping his brother, the men had injected Cole with something and took his brother away. Then they strapped him down and started running tests on him. Cole closed his reddening blue eyes and willed his tears to go away. It was already hard to breath through his stuff nose. Cole wondered what the bastards did to his brother. Did they shoot him? Throw him in some lab with other infected people and torture him? He growled at that thought and tugged at the restraints that kept him down on the cold lab table. The chill of metal helped keep his fever down at least.

The man groaned and swallowed hard. It was so hard to breath laying down. Why couldn't they have at least at him up or something? He closed his eyes trying to calm himself down a little. He couldn't hear anything outside of this room. It was sound proof. In the stillness, his body ached to quench his thirst if not his hunger. He would never satisfy the latter. He wasn't hungry for human food anymore after all. He wanted blood and flesh. The very thought sickened him and filled him with desire. He hated it. He would never be the monster they wanted him to be. He would fight against it forever. If he couldn't, he'd put a bullet in his own head before he harmed someone.

Cole tugged at the restraints around wrists, his ankles, torso, and throat but it did nothing to help him. He panted a little and coughed. Gosh his throat burned. His blond hair stuck to his sweaty face and obscured his vision. He growled out in his anger and hissed. Upon realizing what he just did, he quieted himself and stopped moving. On the bright side, being strapped down meant he couldn't hurt anyone.

Alexis sighed, grabbing her two silver pistols from the desk drawer. She hardly ever had to shoot them, but she didn't want to be caught unprepared. There was no such thing as too careful these days. She strapped them to her belt and nodded to Shaun.

"They should be leaving the compound about now. They stepped up security a bit since the last time we were there, so we'll have to be extra careful." She checked her boot and arm knives, making sure that they were loose in their sheaths and easily accessible. "You ready?"

Shaun nodded, doing his own quick equipment check. He was a little more heavily armed, with his semiautomatic shotgun and two Uzis that were strapped to his back. He had his own arsenal of blades as well, most of which were much larger then Alexis' six inch blades.

"Let's go."

The two walked quietly to the front door, Shaun taking the lead. They were able to sneak most of the way to The Center, only impaired once by a sickened man that Shaun was easily able to incapacitate. Alexis dealt with the security code. Despite their attempts to keep people out, she was able to hack it after just a few minutes, trusting her brother to watch her back while she worked. She opened the door silently, leading the way in. This particular door seemed to lead to an underground storage room that was thankfully deserted. As she expected, it seemed that almost everyone had locked themselves in the concrete bunker where they slept. The walls there were soundproof, probably to keep out the screams of their 'patients', so she didn't have to worry about waking them.

"The holding cells should be this way," she said quietly, heading down one hallway.

Food.... water...burning...

Those were the only thoughts that circulated his mind. Those were the things that were ailing after all. That and alleviating himself. Gosh did he need to use the facilities right about now. They used to let him go to bathroom, but today they hardly came into the room. He squirmed a little where he lay but that didn't help him. He tried to wait longer... then longer.... and then some more, but it didn't feel like the scientists were going to come in and help him. He had to do what any other person would do; just let go. It was a hard thing to do and quite abashing but no one was watching and he didn't really have a choice.

Cole swallowed what little pride he had left and let himself go. It was disgusting, but felt so very relieving. With that biological need out of the way, Cole was back to thinking about how thirsty he was and how hungry he was. When was the last time he had something to drink? Early that morning and the fever only helped to make him thirstier. Gosh the heat was unbearable. The chill of the table no longer kept him cold. His body had gotten used to the temperature of the metal. His throat was so scratchy. He licked his dry chapped lips and coughed. He closed his eyes a little and they watered. They were burning to.

When he looked up again, he turned his gaze towards the large bullet proof glass on one of the walls. There was no one there. He was about to turn away again when he saw the door open a crack. He tensed up a little and narrowed his eyes. The door opened a little more. He couldn't really see who walked in. Perfect. He just peed and now the scientists were coming. Wonderful stroke of luck.

Alexis sifted through the trash first, looking for any salvageable syringes or samples. There wasn't much of use, but she took what she could. Some of it she would have to wait to get to her lab before knowing its usefulness. She stuck everything she might could use in her pouch and went on. It was risky to take any of the samples they were using - those were carefully cataloged and monitored. She would have to risk getting one of her own. She reached into her bag and pulled out one of her few remaining sterile syringes. She started to walk into one of their holding chambers, but a firm hand on her arm stopped her.

"What are you doing?" Shaun whispered, trying to pull her back. She gently shrugged out of his grip. He let go reluctantly, still standing in an unmistakably protective pose.

"I need to know what they're doing to these people," she responded, as calmly as possible. She really didn't have time to be explaining all this to him, but he wouldn't let her go in otherwise. "They could be trying to cure them as they claim, but I don't buy it. I never did. That's why I left. If they are making this virus even more dangerous, I need to know about it. Besides, if their mutants' blood reacts differently to the antivirus, I may be able to create a strand that will survive. This is important, Shaun."

She started back into the room. Shaun looked on the verge of grabbing her again, but instead he turned to guard the hallway, muttering a string of curses.

Alexis started a bit when she saw the creature strapped to the table. His eyes still looked human; she hadn't been expecting that. He must still be early in the disease process. The eyes developed a disturbing red rim after a creature had eaten raw flesh.
"I'm just going to take a quick blood sample," she said slowly, in case this thing could still understand her. "It won't hurt."

Cole tried to stay calm. If someone was coming in here, he knew they were probably scientists. They never answered his questions and just told him not to worry about his brother or anything else for that matter because he wasn't the same anymore. Well, of course he wasn't the same! The assholes shoved their virus infected needle into his blood stream. He had only been here a week and he was already in the deeper stages of the disorder. He shouldn't be like this yet! What the hell did they do to him? His brother hadn't been this hot with fever for nearly two weeks. He had been hot three days ago.

Cole heard the door open and he turned his gaze to the woman. He had never seen her before. Was she knew? Maybe just another scientist from a different area of this hell hole. He growled at her when she approached him with the needle. He squirmed on the table. He didn't want to make things easier for the scientists. They forced him into this, so why should he be compliant with their wishes? He was dying anyway.

"What did you people do to my brother?" he asked her. He didn't expect her to answer, but it was worth a shot. He licked his lips again and turned his face a little to cough out of habit. The closer she got to him, the more he craved sinking his teeth into her arm. She smelled so good. He whined to himself and shut his eyes and he tried to move away from her. He didn't want to bite her. He didn't want to bite anyone. He growled out his frustration and thrashed on the table.

Alexis pointedly avoided the thing's eyes, focusing instead on his arm. She tied a string of rubber around his bicep as a make-do tourniquet. His thrashings made things difficult. His veins were already shrunken and withdrawn from dehydration, making them difficult targets. His moving made things almost impossible, but she was determined. What she didn't expect, was for him to talk to her. Usually when a person was this far into the disease, their minds had already gone. Despite herself, she looked up at him. He seemed sincere, desperate. What had they done to this man?

She shook her head and returned her gaze to his arm, trying to find any semblance of a vein in the thrashing mass of flesh. Her mind wandered back to what he had said, and she found it impossible to ignore. She couldn't even imagine what she would feel if something happened to her Shaun.

"Don't lump me in with these cretins," she said, surprising herself by responding. "And I don't know anything about your brother. . . . sorry." She bit her bottom lip in frustration. "Would you just hold still for Christ's sake!?" she exploded.

Shaun turned quickly when his sister raised her voice, pointed his gun at the creature on the table. He stopped before he pulled the trigger. Everything seemed to be under control. Satisfied that Alexis was in no immediate danger, he turned his attention back to the hallway.

At her words, Cole snarled at her. It was hard to control the noises that came from his throat recently. It did hurt his throat though. He had to turn away again to cough. He did stop moving though. It was hurting him more than it was hurting her after all. She would eventually stick him with the needle anyway. He was tired. He hadn't slept in a while. It was hard to fall asleep when one couldn't breath and was constantly occupied with other thoughts. He swallowed hard and closed his eyes and groaned. He didn't look up at her through he process.

When Cole heard the door again, he looked up to see the man and the gun. He tensed up and he bared his teeth at the man. He couldn't help but show aggression. The man was threatening his life. He wanted to die, and yet everything inside him screamed live. It was infuriating! When the man left, he calmed down again and relaxed and just let the woman take the samples she wanted from him.

He didn't want to beg, but he had to. He couldn't stand it anymore. He looked up at the woman and swallowed hard again. "Please... water..." he whispered. "I need water. So thirsty... I can't breathe..." Okay the last part came out without him wanting it to. He didn't want to beg too much now. He squeezed his eyes shut and moaned to himself. "What are you people doing to me?" he asked. "Why... why am I so sick? I.. I shouldn't be..."

Finally, he stopped moving, allowing Alexis to draw up a sample of blood. She took only a few mls. With that small amount she could make up several slides, run a few tests, and still have some left to freeze. She quickly stuck the needle into the purple rubber top of a collection tube. The tube contained anticoagulant agents that would keep the blood from clotting. Satisfied, she stuck both the syringe and blood tube in an iced pocket of her pouch. She was just about to leave when the pitiful creature began to speak again.

“I told you not to compare me to them.” Despite her harsh tone, his words made her ache for him. He sounded so hurt, so helpless. She couldn’t just leave him like that. She couldn’t. Without another word she left the room, walking quickly past Shaun into the observation room on the other side of the glass.
“What are you doing, Alex?” Shaun hissed, following her. “If you got what you came for, let’s get out of here!”

“Just give me one second,” she said, taking a clean beaker off the shelf and filling it with cold tap water. “then we can go.”

Shaun groaned, but didn’t argue. He recognized the look in her eye. It was the same look that she had gotten when she brought home an injured bird or cat or whatever else she may have come across. He had learned, just as his parents had before they passed, that there was no winning against Alexis when she was determined to help something. He just hoped that she wasn’t getting in over her head this time.

She entered the room with the beaker, wanting to get out of there as soon as possible. She hesitated when she reached the table.
“Hold on,” she said, taking a thick pair of rubber gloves off of one of the shelves and putting them on. She didn’t want to be too close to his mouth without protection.
“Here,” she put the beaker to his lips, letting the cool water trickle down into his mouth. Recalling his last comment, she spoke again.
“What do you mean you ‘shouldn’t be’ this sick?”

Cole looked up into the woman's face but he couldn't read anything from her face. She looked just as cold as the other scientists. She told him not to compare her to the other but how could he not? They were the only experience he had when it came to scientists. She was quiet like them, commanding like them, poking him and taking blood like them. What else was he supposed to think? Was this some kind of trick on their part trying to get more information on how he would react to a new condition or something? He hated playing their damned mind tricks.

Then the woman left without saying a word. His hope deflated a little. So she wasn't going to bring him water? He growled in his frustration and yanked at the restraints again trying to rip himself off the table. He even hit his head against the table. That wasn't a fun feeling. Now he had a headache to add to everything else. He panted a little and stared up at the ceiling and tried to get the tears to go away, but they fell from the corner of his eyes thanks to the pull of gravity. They weren't the simple salt water tears humans shed. It was blood.

Cole heard the door again and looked over to see the woman and the water. Water! He tried to sit up a little to drink but he couldn't move. He was so thankful when the woman came to him and pressed the beaker to his dried lips. He drank from the water greedily. He ended up drinking all the water she had offered him. Well most most of it. Some had trickled out of his mouth thanks to the position he was in. With his thirst finally sated, he pulled away from the empty beaker.

"Thank you," he answered her. "And I meant exactly what I said. I shouldn't be this sick. Are you guys trying some mink fudge experiment on me now? Who are you? Why do you tell me not to compare you to the other scientists here?"

Alexis watched him drink, expressionless. It made her sick, the level of dehydration he was exhibiting. There was no excuse for it. How hard was it to pour someone a glass of water? She wrinkled her nose a bit. From the smell of it, they hadn't allowed him use of a lavatory either. Depriving him his simple needs wouldn't give them any better results. This was torture, plain and simple. It made her sick. It was why she had left.

"Because I'm not one of them. Isn't that obvious by now?" she asked, raking some loose strands of hair out of her face. This was more than she had been expecting when she planned this raid.

Shaun popped his head back into the room.

"We need to get out of here, now, Alexis. The night shift will be making their rounds soon. They may have a small staff now, but I reckon they'll be heavily armed."

"One more second, Shaun," she said, much to her brother's frustration. "Look, I can't stay here much longer. Just. . . how long have you been sick?" She wanted to get as much information as she could before she left. She didn't want to have to come back here any sooner then necessary.

"It's kind of hard to tell the difference," he remarked. "You do similar things, what with the blood draw. I thought you worked here," he admitted. He figured out pretty quick that she didn't now. They wouldn't be in a rush to get out of this place if they did work here. They'd have a nice comfy bed and rooms sealed tight so little infected people wouldn't run into the rooms and scare the poor things out of their cushioned beds. He growled a little. They were the only people he would ever dream of snapping in two. They had taken away the last family he had and now fucked him to.

"I've been sick I think... about a week," he answered her. "I started getting symptoms the day after they injected me with their virus," he continued. He closed his burning eyes and debated if he should tell her anything else. If she was different, then maybe in the end she would find a way to get rid of this virus. Maybe things would be normal again with neighbors being friendly, people having nice barbeques on the weekends and being around their friends with no worry about tomorrow. Now the past sounded like paradise.

Cole looked back up at her with a melancholy glint."All I know is the virus isn't supposed to be fast acting. From what I heard, I've kept sanity the longest. I gotta say, it's hard. Just smelling you and everyone here drives me my hunger." His gaze dropped to her arm which happened to be the closest thing to him. He turned his face away and bit his own lip. The taste of blood helped him a little. "They said... something about combining DNA and there were some perks. Now... science lady, I gave you what I know. Please get rid of this virus. I want my brother healthy again. Would you do me one last favor before you go?" he asked. "Say a small prayer for me and put a bullet in my head; a nice and clean death. I don't want to hurt anyone..."

Alexis sighed. It was a fair assumption.

"I used to work here," she said, feeling her guilt swell from the statement, "but that was a long time ago. I left just before the outbreak started."

His answer to her question left her in a small state of shock. How could he possibly be this far along already? A week into the disease he should still be mostly human. She knew they had been modifying the virus, but they seemed to be making it more aggressive, not less! What were they thinking?

"Wait, they injected you with the virus?" she asked, incredulous. Things had gotten even worse then she could have imagined. To inject a healthy person with this monster of a disease was not just a breach of their Hippocratic oath, it was a blatant crime against humanity. It was sick. She turned away, not able to look at what her once-comrades had created.

"I'm sorry," she said, meaning every word, "but I can't. I'm a doctor, first and foremost. No matter the circumstance, I cannot take a human life." She could feel tears burning in her eyes but she ignored them. What had the world come to that someone would beg for death like this? If only her research had wielded more positive results, she might could have been able to do something. It was infuriating!

When the doctor denied his request, he frowned. She wouldn't let him die? She wouldn't take human life? Cole wasn't exactly human anymore. He was falling into the virus's haze. He doubted he would be able to ignore his hunger for too much longer. It was already one of the only things he could think of doing! She didn't want to take human but neither did he. Dying now would prevent what he assumed to be the inevitable thing. He would end up hurting someone and then what would happen? More people would suffer or fall into the virus haze.

"If you kill me, more lives will be saved. What if I get out somehow and am too sick to think? I'll hurt people. If you can't shoot me, have him shoot me. He doesn't seem to have any reservations about shooting someone infected. I am not all that much human anymore. How can I be human when all I think about his nibbling on your arm?" he asked her. "I don't want to die some crazed flesh eating monster. I want to die with at least some shred of humanity. I don't want to be a lab rat for people who don't give a damn about people."

He debated for a moment and shook his head. "If you can't kill me, can you at least get my brother out of here and put him out of his misery. When I came here, he was already infected and falling into the haze. By now, he should... his mind should be lost," he said. "He's 17. Brown hair, had brown eyes. Pale complexion and freckles. I hope that helps in finding him. There is a room they put the infected in."

Alexis listened to his request, shaking her head. They should have already been out of here by now. She hadn't expected to run into anyone who could speak, not to mention someone so sympathetic. Shaun came to her side, hearing himself mentioned.

"Give the guy a break, sis," he whispered. "I'll do it if you can't." He pulled out one of his hand guns, leveling it at the man's head. Alexis put her hand on his arm, pushing it down.

"Stop it. I said no, and I won't sit by and watch. I'm sorry, and I understand, but we can't help you. We're risking a lot just being in here." She sighed, rubbing her eyes. "I can't take the time to look for your brother, but I will keep my eye out while we're here. That's the best I can do."

She shook her head. She knew it was time to leave, but she couldn't make herself. She couldn't even imagine just leaving him on that table. Against her better judgement, she went back into the observation room and grabbed a specially designed muzzle.

"I'm putting this on you," she said, "and I'm letting you out of your restraints. I hope you find your brother."

Shaun began protesting before she even finished her sentence, but she was already moving to strap the muzzle to the man's head.

Cole looked up at the man as he entered. The gun lifted and he smiled a little. He let his eye lids drop and he got comfortable where he lay. His instincts screamed for him to take action, to get out of the way and kill the man for raising a gun at his head, but he forced himself to relax. This was a good thing. There wouldn't be any more pain. He'd be free and his soul would be saved since he hadn't harmed anyone in his life unless he had to; like the infected when they attacked him or his brother. He slowed his breathing and thought about all the good things about his life, but the shot never came. He frowned when the woman prevented his release.

He groaned and banged his head against the table again. He winced and stared up at the ceiling to calm himself. He didn't need to go into an infected tantrum right now. He remembered how the lat one went; with him slammed down and tortured. He didn't want that again. Even if this woman was different, he doubted she wanted him to start snarling and snipping like some enraged tiger looking for a bite of meat.

Cole arched an eyebrow and came back with the muzzle. Well he really hadn't been expecting that one. He let the woman muzzle him and stared up at her. He couldn't help but give her a smile. She really was different. She was really going to let him go? His heart fluttered a little in joy. When the restraints fell away, he sat up and rubbed his wrists and looked at the bruises he had obtained from them.

"Thanks," he called to her before he sped out of the room in search for his brother.

He checked all the infected lab areas but none of the people there were his brother. He reached the last lab in no time at all. He saw something covered up on a table he had once rested on. He walked over to the table a little more than curious. He gingerly lifted up the bloody white sheet and nearly gagged where he stood as fresh bloody tears fell down his face. He dropped to his knees and stared at the floor with unblinking eyes. His brother had been on the table; his chest split open and organs missing. They had been dissecting him. They had killed his brother. Cole had brought his brother here not to be saved, but to die. He gave a keen in his desperation and his hands turned to fists. He saw blood. He wanted to rip the scientists' throats out! He wanted them to bleed all over their precious white floors and tools. He wanted them to suffer for what they did.

Cole swallowed hard and tried to calm himself. No. If he killed the men, he would be no better than them and the monsters they made him. There had to be something he could do. Then he remembered the woman. She was a scientist, but she was trying to find a cure. He didn't know what the people here were trying to do. Maybe he could help the girl. She had saved him after all. He sped through the halls trying to find her and doing his best to get the image of his brother out of his mind.

All of Shaun's muscles tensed as he watched his sister release the creature that could easily kill them both if given the chance. He kept his gun cocked, pointed at the floor but still following the thing's movements as he ran out of the room. Only then did he allow himself to relax. He turned to his older sister, trying to control himself.

"What were you thinking?" he raged. "For someone so smart, you sure can be stupid sometimes, you know that? What would you have done if he lost control? Attacked us? Seriously Alex, try to think some!" Alexis, bless her, looked genuinely surprised at his anger.

"The muzzle locks, he can't take it off without the key. And if he had have tried something, I have you to look after us, right?" she smiled, making him shake his head with a sigh. He could never stay mad at her when she looked at him like that.

"Fine," he mumbled, stepping away with his hands raised. "You win. Let's just get out of here, okay? You got the samples you needed, right?"

"Most of them. I'd like to try and get a couple more, if we can."

"As long as you don't release everyone we draw from, fine. Let's just hurry, okay?"

Alexis lead the way into a few other examination rooms. Shaun needn't have worried about her releasing anyone else, since all the other 'patients' here seemed to be completely mindless. She wasn't sure what made the first one different. She felt a faint sense of hope that his blood would hold some answers.

Cole backtracked through the labs trying to find the woman and the guy with the guns. They had probably already made it out of the building, but it didn't hurt to check. He didn't know how long he had been searching after all. He wanted to get out of here so badly. He was so hungry. He shook his head. He couldn't think of that right now. He sniffled a little both from his sickness and his distress for his lost little brother. On the bright side, the young little thing didn't have to live in this place anymore and had never tasted human flesh. God would have mercy on the child.

Cole made it back to his old room and looked around. She wasn't there but he didn't really expect them to be there. Water. he needed more water. He went over to the faucet and filled a beaker with water again before he lifted it up and hit the muzzle. Crap. That was going to make things harder than he wanted it. He reached up to pull it off to drink the water, but it was locked. He tugged at it but it was made for this purpose. He growled in frustration before he gave up. The man lifted the beaker again and slowly spilled the water through the holes. When he had his fill, he set it down and looked out the window. That's when he saw the woman and the man walking out the door. Ah, perfect.

The man sped through the lab again and out the doors. "Hey!" he called out and reached out to grab her arm. "Hey.. I... um... I know I am infected and you probably don't want me anywhere around you guys but... can I come with you? Maybe I can offer you some type of help and stuff. I can go out among other infected and stuff so I figure I'd be able to do things for you until my mind is lost.. .might as well do something productive, right?"

Alexis had to have Shaun hold down a few of her unwilling blood donors, most of them were thrashing at their bonds in an attempt to bite into her. When they had collected all the samples her pack would hold safely, she nodded to Shaun.

"That should be plenty. Let's get back home - I'm curious to see what they've been doing to this virus." She turned and walked out of the last prisoner's room, Shaun following her dutifully. A quick movement caught their attention, and Alexis saw that first man running towards her. She reached for her guns, suddenly regretting her decision to let him go. He put his hand on her before she could draw her weapon.

Shaun reacted faster then she had ever seen him move, grabbing hold of the man and slamming him against the wall. A low growl rumbled deep in his throat, sounding eerily like one of the creatures that they fought against.

"Hold on, hold on," Alexis said, putting her hand on her brother's shoulder as she heard what the man said. She regarded him for a while, thinking. It was always good to have an extra pair of eyes around, but she didn't know how much she could trust him. He seemed legitimate though, and despite herself she wanted to trust him. Having him around would also mean a ready supply of infected blood, if he didn't mind her drawing from him again.

"The muzzle stays on," she said. "Non debatable. And it might be a good idea not to sneak up on Shaun. He's got a quick hand. Let him go, Shaun."

He did as she said slowly, easing his captive back onto the ground.

Cole was a little surprised when the human slammed him against the wall. He should have expected it really. He growled at the man without really meaning to as his hands went up to try and pull the man's hand away from him. Before he could really hurt the human, the woman spoke again and brought his attention to her. He gave her a nod. He understood her reservations and the wanting of the muzzle. He didn't mind it. He just hoped she had a straw or something.

When he was free, Cole got up and dusted himself off a little. "That's fine. Do you have a straw? It is hard to drink with the muzzle on," he commented. "I want to actually get most of the water in my mouth instead of wearing it." As they started to walk together, another thought came to him. "What... what should I do about the... hunger?" he asked her. "I would never wish to eat a person but my body does need some kind of substance. Do you know of a way to suppress the desire for flesh? And if there is a way, how will I actually eat with the muzzle?"

Cole let his eyes scan over the area trying to see any infected waking around. He didn't sense anyone at least. Maybe there weren't any others around here besides the ones that were already in the building. He wondered where the woman lived and did her experiments. Was it the same as this building? "My name is Cole by the way. What are your names?"

Alexis started moving again in the direction they had come in. She wanted to get out of here before the guards did their sweep. She nodded as he talked. He made a lot of sense for someone who was supposed to be insane.

"I'm sure we can get you a straw, or work something else out. We'll figure out your eating situation later. If we can't think of anything else, we can always lock you up while you eat. I'd hate to do that, but we have to keep everyone safe."

They reached the door, and she opened it slowly.

"The coast it clear, let's get out of here."

Shaun took the lead as soon as they left the building, gun pointed straight ahead in case anything tried to surprise them. They moved slowly, sticking to the shadows as much as possible. There were a few stragglers, but they were able to avoid most of them. Alexis began to relax as their house came into view. They stopped beside a nearby house, letting Shaun check the alley way before they continued moving. Without warning, something jumped out at them from one of the broken windows, crashing into Shaun with a terrifying shriek. He was knocked to the ground. He fired his gun, hitting the thing in the gut, but it didn't slow it down.

Shaun cursed, using his large hands to hold onto the creature's face, preventing it from biting him.

"Get this freak off of me," he snarled, unable to force it off of him. Alexis pointed her gun at it, but she couldn't get a clear shot that wouldn't risk hitting Shaun as well.

"All right," he answered her as he followed them. He hated moving around as if he was afraid of everything. He just wanted to walk to wherever they had to go without the sneaking behind things and checking things out slowly. He didn't have much patients anymore. Every time they slowed down he tugged at his clothes or tapped his foot trying to distract himself from just jolting forward. He even ended biting into his own lip. That seemed to calm him down a bit since he got the taste of blood.

Cole heard the breathing of an infected before the creature jumped out of the window. Cole had stopped walking and cocked his head to the side. It was an odd feeling. He didn't feel threatened by the creature. He almost felt... like he belonged with the thing. It was something rather hard to explain or even understand. It almost felt like the thing was kin. He soon came back to himself when his human friends were trying to fight off the creature.

Cole snarled out of instinct and launched himself forward. He tackled the infected man and the two rolled on the ground. The infected man tried to bite Cole but Cole was stronger and faster. He slammed the thing into the ground a little and with a loud snap, broke the creature neck. Instantly the infected man stopped moving. Cole got off the creature and wiped his hands a little and swallowed hard. "Keep moving. I feel a few more coming," he explained.

Shaun rolled onto his feet as soon as Cole took the thing off of him. He grabbed his gun and pointed it at the struggling mass of infected flesh, tempted to take the shot despite the risk of hitting Cole. He stopped himself however, feeling a small amount of loyalty to him for saving his hide. Luckily, Cole had the creature dead in a matter of moments. He was more then aware however, that the sounds of the struggle would begin attracting the beasts like flies to a carcass.

Alexis didn't need to be told twice; the group began running towards their house, no longer worried about drawing attention. A few more creatures jumped out at them as they became more visible, screaming in that primal way that made her skin crawl. Shaun deftly took them out with a few precise shoots to the head. He quickly unlocked the door, covering the opening as he ushered the other two inside.

"Move, move!" he shouted, firing off a few more rounds as a mob began to form. Once everyone was safely inside, he slammed the door shut and bolted it. "Let's get to the basement," he said, not trusting the door to hold against the weight of the hungry dead pressing against it. He had reinforced it with metal not long after the outbreak started, but it could still only take so much punishment without breaking. The basement was more secure. Built as a fallout shelter in the sixties, it had 30 cm thick concrete walls and an iron door that an elephant couldn't break through.

Alexis lead the way to the basement, Shaun bringing up the rear in case something did break through the front door. He quickly slammed the thick metal door shut behind them, locking it. Once they had a moment to breath, he turned to Cole and offered him his hand.
"I'm Shaun, this is Alexis. Thanks for the save back there."

Cole ran with his companions and constantly looked about. Since Shaun had the front covered with his gun, Cole stayed at the rear and attacked anything that tried to come up behind them. He had gone in to bite their throats a couple of times only to remember he had a muzzle around his mouth. That served to be a better protection than he would have imagined. Cole may have wanted to bite the infected during the fight, but thinking about it later, Cole would have been rather queasy.

At last, they made it to shelter. He slipped in past Shaun and followed Alexis into the basement. Now that they were safe, Cole relaxed a little and looked up at his companions. "It's nice to meet you Shaun, Alexis. I wish it was under better circumstances, but you did save my life so I guess this was a good time to," he answered. "And of course I saved you. Why wouldn't I have?" He shook the man's hand and pulled back before he got the urge to rip it off or something.

Cole turned his gaze away from the two humans and started to explore his new underground home. He was quick to find a little room that didn't really have anything in it besides a small bed against the wall. He'd take this room as a lodging while he was sane. He flopped down on the bed and buried his face in the pillow a little to try and sleep. He was so tired. "I'll be here if you need me!" he called out after a moment.

Shaun gave his new ally a crooked smile as he let go of his hand.

"Just because you said you'd come with us, didn't mean I could trust you. I was just glad to see you had my back, is all." He shrugged. "Not that that means I trust you, mind. Not completely." With that he took of his jacket, throwing it over the back of his lounge chair where he promptly plopped down. He kept his guns strapped to him though, not quite ready to be completely at ease around Cole.

Alexis was a little more trusting, quickly ridding herself of the heavy weaponry. She wasn't a big fan of them anyway; they were more of a necessity than anything. She took quick note of Cole claiming his space. She didn't mind; that room had been mostly unused, only occupied occasionally when a traveler would stay there for a night or two. She was a little surprised that he had made himself at home so quickly, but at least it would give her time to study her new blood samples.

She quickly unpacked her gatherings, placing a few used syringes into her autoclave to be sterilized. She took a few drops of blood from each tube she had collected and made several smear slides, taking her time to look over each one as Cole slept and Shaun watched from the corner.
