Learning to Love Empty
PostSubject: Learning to Love   Learning to Love Icon_minitimeFri Sep 25, 2009 6:18 pm

High School senior Michelle Beyr walked the halls aimlessly after school. It was the middle of the first semester, and she had just transfered into this town. She had already decided not to bother making friends; there was no point since she would not be here long. Still, she had promised her father that she would check out a few clubs. So here she was, searching for room 210, where there was supposed to be an art club going on. This school was so confusing though, she didn't know if she would find the room in time to try it out.

PostSubject: Re: Learning to Love   Learning to Love Icon_minitimeFri Sep 25, 2009 6:26 pm

Meanwhile, Joey sat at one of the front desks of room 210, waiting for the club to settle down. There weren't many members to the art club, but many seemed to have an obnoxious habit of showing up late. While waiting, he doodled aimlessly in a sketchbook, making little more than simple cartoons of himself and some other random characters. Other people in the room chatted aimlessly, ignoring him until the club actually began. He hoped it would be a little more active. He was spending his time jumping from club to club the last couple weeks, attempting to find one he liked. Gaming club had been last week, and book club before that, and so far he was undecided. That left him to see what the art club was about before he made any decision.

So far, it wasn't a great impression.

Michelle glanced at the room numbers. 234, 216. . . finally, she found 210. The room was unusual loud from outside the room; not what she had expected from an art club. Weren't artists supposed to be dignified and thoughtful? She sighed. She was already here though, so it would be a shame to walk away now. With a deep breath, she opened the door. As she expected, it was even louder once the door was no longer muffling the noise. She looked for a place to sit. She didn't recognize any one here. With a sigh, she finally plopped down in a corner. From there, she could observe everyone without drawing too much attention to herself.

Joey glanced up when somebody else came into the room. He watched the girl go toward the corner of the room, shrugged to himself, and returned his gaze to his sketchbook. She didn't seem particularly interesting, much like everyone else in the room to him. So he momentarily ignored her, hoping the club itself would actually start up soon before he grew too fed up with it.

Finally, the club sponsor walked into the room. The room quieted to an extent. Michell listened to the instructions, which seemed fairly simple. Apparently, this was going to be a pretty open club. They were able to take on any project, and use any medium available to the school. The club members would then critique each other's works. She cringed. It was hard to imagine showing anything she made to the whole club. Perhaps this wasn't the club for her, after all. She stood up, planning to sneak out unnoticed. At least she could tell her dad that she tried. He wasn't coming to pick her up for another hour though. She would have to find something else to do. Maybe she could find a pretty spot outside and sketch something.

Joey sighed a little. Great. He wasn't fond of big projects, nor was he fond of the idea that other students would be attempting to give him constructive criticism. He liked criticism, but so far, every student who had ever commented on his work had been able to say nothing more than "Wow, that's awesome!" or "I wish I could draw like that!" It was flattering, but it wasn't criticism, and he knew he wasn't as good as they all thought. He doubted even students interested in art would be able to offer proper criticism.

Seeing that this club wouldn't be as interesting as either of his other two options had been, Joey decided to stand and head out as well. Might as well head home and get homework done, or whittle time away doing something else.

Michelle turned around as she heard the door to the art room open again. So, it looked like someone else had been less that impressed with the club as well. She laughed out loud. She didn't know why; there really wasn't anything funny. She was just so bored that there was really nothing else to do but laugh.
"You skipping out on club activities too?" she asked lightly. She didn't really want to start a conversation, but she felt like it woud be rude to just say nothing.

Joey looked up at Michelle as he turned away from the door, then shrugged. "Eh, I was really only checking it out to see it it'd be worthwhile," he replied. He ran one hand back through his hair, pushing dyed green bangs away from his eyes. "So far it's less promising than the other clubs I've checked out." He took a glance down the hallway and shifted his backpack on his shoulders.

Michelle made a face.
"My dad's been making me circle through the clubs. Have you found anything worth while?"
She brushed her own black hair out of her eyes self-consciously. She liked his bangs, although she would never say so out loud. Green was her favorite color. She had to be on guard, though. Even though this guy seemed no more interested in a friendship than she was, she was beginning to get a familiar feeling. Although she had promised herself not to get attached to anyone here, she had an annoying habit of liking people. And that was something that she couldn't just turn off.

He shrugged again. "Well, gaming and book clubs seem to be alright to me, but I don't know what you're into," he replied. "I guess if you're into those things, they're alright, though I don't really like the librarian running the book club. But that's me." Joey paused to stifle a yawn behind his hand. Seven hours of school always left him tired by the afternoon. It was sometimes a miracle he could ever function by three o' clock.

Michelle shook her head.
"I've never really followed video games. I love to read, but I prefer to keep it to myself. I don't really like to talk about what I read." She laughed nervously.
"Anyway, I don't want to waste your time," she said, hinting slightly. If she continued talking like this, they were sure to find something in common, and then she would want to talk about that. And then she would want to find more things they had in common. And then. . . she would have broken her internal promise. Then again, would it really be that bad to have one friend. . . would it?

"Really? Hm. Most people never like the books I read, anyway . . . " Joey shook his head a little. "But alright, I guess. You're not really wasting any time, though, unless you've got to get going?" Joey found himself slightly surprised to really be talking with this girl. He wasn't very good at starting or holding conversations and normally found no interest in doing so. Maybe it was because she wasn't giving him the same taunts and stupid looks that most people often did anymore.

Michelle bit her bottom lip. She couldn't just out and out lie to the guy.
"No, I've got about an hour to waste. My father was expecting me to be at the club for the whole time, so. . ." she trailed off.
She was kind of interested to learn more about this guy.

Joey gave a slow nod as he understood. "I see . . . I'd offer you a ride home, but my trashy little motorcycle's not great for getting more than one person anywhere." He chuckled a little bit. "So, what, your dad trying to get you to socialize more at the school? That seems like it'd get a bit obnoxious after awhile."

Michelle shrugged.
"Well, I just moved here, and he want's me to feel at home. I don't really see the point though, since we don't even have a year before we all graduate and go off to who-knows-what college." She laughed. She didn't want to make it seem too serious; she really didn't mind playing alone for a while.

"Yeah, I kind of have to agree there." Joey leaned up against the wall, propping one foot up. "I'm not too social a person. My mom tries to get me to be sometimes, but it never quite works. I got most of my habits regarding people from her, anyway." He laughed quietly and shook his head a little bit at the thought.

[Not sure where exactly you two are at, but I'll just plant myself right down....]

Wandering the halls, Artemis found himself looking, oddly for the door to room 210, the after-school Art Club. Finding the room with ease, he popped into the room and waved to nobody in particular, sitting next to a chatting pair of students who, like him, looked to be seniors. Placing his bag down, he drew from it a manga titled 'Rurouni Kenshin', set down the manga on his lap, and began to immediately draw with gentle strokes of his pencil the front cover picture, humming softly to himself. "And after this, Kendo...Goody."

[Well, that changes a bit...Let me repost.]

Wandering the halls, Artemis found himself looking, oddly for the door to room 210, the after-school Art Club. Finding the room with ease, he noticed two chattering people who looked to be seniors, like himself. "Hey, have you come for the Art Club meeting?" He asked them, folding his arms across his chest as he pushed the short, chocolate brown hair out of eyes of the same color.

Michelle nodded in response to Joey's comment. She looked up as someone approached them.
"Well," she said, "we were going to, but nobody in there really seemed serious. And I don't know about Joey, but I didn't like the idea of flaunting my work for other people to see." She shrugged a bit uncomfortably.
"How about you, you going in?" she asked out of curiosity.

Artemis nodded. "I kinda have to. I'm President of this club. Artemis Amaranth, at your service. It'd be nice if the two of you came in. We could use some serious people." Stepping through the door, it was as if the previous noise had never existed. Everyone within sat quietly and pretended they'd been doing so the entire time. "Alright, it looks like we've got to get rid of a few of you...Ok, maybe most of you. So, basically, everybody except Drake and Alice, get out and go home. We don't need people who don't try..."

Joey watched Artemis with a sort of blank look, choosing to say nothing. He had nothing to input that the girl hadn't, anyway. He stayed where he was up against the wall, watching with only mild interest as Artemis went into the club, and the noise afterward immediately ceased.

Michelle couldn't help but raise her eyebrows, impressed. What the teacher had been unable to do, this senior did just by his presence. And it wasn't hard to see why. He wasn't in the room for two minutes before people started trailing out with their heads hung low. A few of the braver one's stayed, determined to prove that they were serious.
"Well," she commented to Joey, "he certainly doesn't mess around, does he?"

Artemis layed out a folder, closing his eyes as he spoke again. "And the two of you out in the hall, you can come in, even if you don't wish to join. I don't mind spectators."

Michelle couldn't help but laugh a bit in disbelief. She wasn't sure if she was impressed by this guy's confidence, or just annoyed. She turned to Joey, hoping for his input.
"What do you think? You wanna give it another try? I don't want to be the only one walking back in there." She made a face.

[Don't worry about it. We've all been addicted to things at some point.]
